If your tow vehicle has a GVW of less than 3.5 tonnes then the maximum permissible weight of any trailer you pull will also be 3.5 tonnes. This is only applicable if the trailer is fitted with either an overrun or electrical braking system.
Traffic on a motorway is travelling very fast. If you need to return to the motorway from the hard shoulder, use the hard shoulder to gain speed until you are travelling fast enough to merge with the Motorway traffic.
