Ensure that the combined weight of the trailer and its load does not exceed the maximum towing weight specified on your vehicles VIN Plate. If it does you may receive a fine or points on your licence.
If your tow vehicle has a GVW of less than 3.5 tonnes then the maximum permissible weight of any trailer you pull will also be 3.5 tonnes. This is only applicable if the trailer is fitted with either an overrun or electrical braking system.
My Range Rover weight in at over 2 tonnes and my boat on its trailer must weight another 2 tonnes at least.
