Costs of Car Breakdown Cover and Car Transport Delivery Services

Breakdown Recovery Services
If you are looking for Car Breakdown and Recovery cover there are lots of companies out there who offer this service, the AA, RAC, Greenflag etc. They all offer different types of service levels from simple 'Take You to The Nearest Garage' to 'All Inclusive Packages' that will get your car home even from Europe!
Whilst a cheap package may seem appealing consider that if your break down a long way from home your car may end up at a garage that is also a long way from your home. This can lead to difficulties in communication with the garage and you may still have to pay for a delivery company to bring the car back to your home if it cannot be fixed. Typical yearly subscription prices are shown below:

  1. Basic Roadside Repair or Tow to Nearby Garage - £30
  2. As Above but with Home Start - £80
  3. All the above plus recovery to Any UK Address - £110
  4. All Inclusive including hire car plus recovery from Europe - £300

Car Delivery Services
If you are simply looking to have a car delivered (A classic sports car or project car for example) then you will need to enlist the services of a car delivery company

They tend to offer two types of service. Firstly they may offer to have your car delivered by a driver who will actually drive your car to its destination. While this may be acceptable to dealers looking to have cars moved to and from auctions etc it is not ideal for private individuals who do not wish for there pride and joy to be raced down the outside of the motorway at full speed.
The second option is to have your car delivered on the back of a truck or trailer. This tends to be more expensive but is generally the preferred option particularily as many vehicles that require transporting are none runners or not road legal.
Single Car transporters are the most convienient option as you can arrange exact time and place etc. Multi car transporters are often less accomodating and you will have to change your schedule to fit around them. Typical costs for both services are outlined below:

  1. Trade Plate Driver - 40p per delivery mile
  2. Single Car Transporter - £1.30 per delivery Mile
  3. Multi Car Transporters - As little as 50p but it depends upon where they are going!
