The Air Filter?
Almost all petrol engined vehicles, including motorcycles, scooters and mopeds
use an air filter to prevent the engine sucking dirt or debris into the engine.
Motorbikes and scooters (Including Chinese Imports) tend to use a thin foam air filter element
that is located in a plastic Air Filter housing. Over time, the air filter can get clogged or wet
and then any motorbike or scooter, chinese or not, will benefit from an air filter change.
Air Filter Change, 4 Stroke Scooter Moped 50cc Chinese
Applies to: Baotian, Sukida, Hoatian, Lifan, Jinlun, Kymco, Tank, Quinqzi, PGO, Roketa, Strada and many more...
50cc chinese clone scooters, motorcycles and mopeds, like those imported from China, typically use a carburetor that relies on the vacuum between the air filter and the fuel jets in the carb to set the fuel delivery. For this reason we DO NOT recommend fitting an aftermarket performance air filter, such as those supplied by K&N unless you intend to change the carburetor as well.
If you attempt to change the standard air filter you will almost certainly get running problems, poor idle, hesitant throttle response and stalling. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! If you want to make your chinese import scooter faster then go to the scooter QMB139 tuning pages.
On most chinese clone scooters, the air filter can be found in a plastic housing just above the transmission next to the rear wheel.
Locate the air filter housing on your chinese scooter, then follow these instructions. Refer to the pics if necessary.
- Remove the cap from the air filter housing. (normally just 3 or 4 screws.)

- Remove the air filter element and inspect carefully for dirt, contamination (ie oil) or damage. Replace if necessary.

- Re-fit the air filter housing cap.
IMPORTANT.
Do not attempt to improve the performance of your chinese imported scooter clone by removing or altering the air filter element. You WILL often run into running difficulties. See our tuning pages for ways to improve performance.
The standard Air Filter fitted to your imported scooter is capable of providing more than enough air to the engine and does not really restrict the air flow the to engine much at all.
Notes
One of the first things most people do when they get a 4 stroke scooter is try to make it go faster. Because people often add performance air filters to cars to improve power, they believe this will work on their scooter. This is not always the case as most cheap 4 stroke scooters depend upon the vacuum created by the filter for correct fuel mixture in the carburetor, you will find that this is the case with nearly all chinese import scooters.
