Battery Replacement and Testing

Most modern 50cc scooters use a 12v electrical system, and therefore use a standard 12v motorcycle battery, obtainable from most motor auto parts suppliers. This is true for your Chinese Clone Scooter as well.

Typically the battery will be located in a compartment beneath your feet as you are sitting on the scooter. Access is relatively simple, you will need a few basic tools to gain access and remove the battery.

Follow these steps.

  1. If fitted, remove the rubber antislip floor mat. It may be stuck down or use a series of clips to keep it in place.
You should now be able to see an access hatch in the floor. Typically you will have to undo a screw/s or release a catch in order to open the hatch.
  2. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery, this cable will be attached to the terminal marked with a minus sign.
  3. You can now disconnect the positive cable (marked with a + symbol. Take care not to touch the chassis or scooter with the tool as you do this to avoid a shock or damage to the scooters electrical system.
  4. You should now be able to remove the battery from your clone honda scooters battery compartment. Some models may have a securing strap holding the 12v battery in place.
  5. To fit a new battery or re-fit your existing battery, follow these instructions in reverse order taking care to attach the positive battery cable first.
  6. To test the battery voltage and charging system see the Testing Your Scooters Battery and Charging System page.

Notes

You can test the charge in the battery of your import scooter without removing the battery first! Simply follow the instructions above to remove the battery compartment cover and then attach a voltmeter to the battery terminals. With the scooters engine switched off you should expect to see between 12v and 12.5v.

With the scooter engine running, you should measure between 13v and 13.5v. For more detail see the Testing Your Scooters Battery and Charging System page.
