Bendix Throw Out Gear
All scooters with an electric starting system, including those 50cc scooters
imported from china, use a Bendix Throw Out Gear to start the engine.
In the UK these Chinese inport scooters are normally branded Boatian,
Huatian, Sukida, Starway or Sonik. In other countries chinese import scooters
are branded Direct Bikes, Lifan, JMStar Tank or similar. The Bendix Gear
operates when the starter motor spins. The Bendix Throw out gear is thrown
outward by the spining motion of the starter and engages with the crankshaft
to spin the engine. QMB139 4 Stroke 50cc Scooter Bendix description.

Removing the Bendix Gear from your 50cc Chinese 4 stroke QMB139 scooter.
If you just hear a whiring sound when you press the starter button on your 50cc 4 stroke chinese import scooter it is possible that the Bendix Throw Out Gear has failed or requires an overhaul. Other causes for the Bendix Gear not engaging with the crankshaft on your chinese scooter can be a weak battery or poor wiring connections, check these first before removing the Bendix Gear.
Although replacement Bendix Throw Out Gears are widely available for imported QMB139 style 4 Stroke Scooters, more often than not the existing Bendix Gear can be cleaned, lubricated and refitted to your 50cc scooter to solve starting problems.
- Place your imported scooter on its center stand. Depending on the model of Chinese import scooter that you have, you might have to remove some bodywork to gain access.
- The bendix throw out gear is located inside the transmission cover of your QMB139 engine, above the variator. See Transmission Cover for instructions on how to remove the cover.
- Once the cover is removed you can access the bendix gear on your QMB139 scooter. Carefully extract the Bendix Throw Out Gear from the transmission.
- Now, with the Bendix Gear removed from the scooter, twist the two halves in opposite directions. The gear should move outwards. Release one half, check that the throw out gear returns to its starting position
- If the mechanisim feels stiff or tight, clean the motorbikes bendix gear thoroughly then lubricate it.
NOTE: Take care not to apply to much lubricant or it may be thrown off the Bendix Gear when starting your scooter and onto the drive belt causing slippage.
- Now refit the Bendix Throw Out Gear back into your 50cc 4 stroke scooter, apply a small amount of grease to both the locating pins.
- Refit the transmission cover to your motorbike, and test the starter!
Notes
Starting problems with Imported 50cc Clone Scooters like Baotian, Sukida, Starway, Direct Bikes and Huatian are often caused by poor electrical connections, ie bad wiring, low battery charge and corrosion. Check these first before spending your money on a replacement Bendix Gear.
Most 4 stroke 50cc clone scooters such as Baotian and Tank and motorbikes and pitbikes use very similar bendix throw out gears. Look on eBay for a cheap replacement.
