Camshaft Removal

The steps outlined below walk you through removing the camshaft from your Chinese import scooters engine. It appears complex, but don't be put off . Simply follow the instructions through step by step and you will get there! Depending upon your scooter model you may have to remove some body panels and other anciliary devices from your scooter to gain access to the cylinder head. If so, simply refer to the relevant chapter in this manual.

  1. Remove the seat and luggage box to reveal the top of the engine. (refer to relevant section)
  2. Undo the four bolts that secure the camshaft cover to the cylinder head.
  3. Now you need to set the engine to TDC (Top Dead Center). Rotate the engine using the kick start lever until the mark on the camshaft sprocket lines up with the cylinder head. Confirm that the hole in the camshaft sprocket is at the top. If it isn't, rotate the engine one full rotation.
  4. Remove the four nuts that secure the camshaft caps. Note: These four bolts also hold the entire cylinder head together so take care not to dislodge the cylinder head.
  5. You should now be able to remove the camshaft from the cylinder head be taking the chain off the camshaft sprocket.
  6. Inspect camshaft and bearing for wear or damage and replace if necessary.
  7. NOTE: If fitting a high performance camshaft to your 50cc 4 stroke chinese import scooter, you may need to fit stiffer valve springs at the same time.
  8. Refitting is the reverse procedure. Be extremely carefull to ensure you have set the engine timing correctly to avoid damage to the valves and pistons.

Notes

Typically the camshaft, even on a cheap import scooter, should last many miles unless the engine has been poorly maintained. Symptoms of a worn camshaft or camshaft followers are low power output, ticking noise from the top of the engine.

If the camshaft is badly worn, you should inspect all other moving parts in the cylinder head carefully for wear as well. If your engine is burning oil, it may be advisable to replace the valve stem seals at the same time.
