Changing Your Brake Pads

Like many modern motorcycles, Chinese import GY6 scooters tend to be fitted with a hydraulic front braking system. Replacement brake pads can be purchased easily online and at most good motorcycle shops. Do not assume that because you have poor brake performance on your scooter that it is the brake pads that are at fault, check carefully for signs of fluid leakage/low brake fluid level or other problems as well.

Although most chinese import scooters have similar brakes, remove your pads first and take them with you when you go to the shop so you can make a comparison.

  1. There is no need to remove the front wheel when changing your scooters brake pads. Simply undo the two 13mm bolts that secure the brake caliper to the front forks. Removing the front caliper from a GY6 style chinese 50cc scooter
  2. You can now remove the caliper from the disk. you may have to wiggle the caliper a bit to slide it out, take care not to damage the brake line.
  3. In the picture below the scooters brake pads are in good, new condition. If they are very worn, perhaps down to the metal, they must be changed. A front brake caliper on a 139QMB clone
  4. To remove the old brake pads, first undo one of the caliper slide pins so you can twist the two halves of the caliper apart. Then carefully remove each pad noting which way round they go. Also take care not to loose the spring clips. Opening the caliper on a chinese baotion v-clic style scooter.
NOTE: you may have to use a screwdriver to lever the calipers piston out to make enough room for the new brake pads to fit.
  5. Reverse this procedure to refit your scooters brake caliper. Make sure you tighten all bolts correctly and use a thread lock fluid to stop the bolts from coming loose!

Notes

If you do break a brake line or spill some brake fluid onto your chinese 4 stroke scooters paint work, wipe it away quickly and wash with warm soapy water. Brake fluid will damage your import scooters paint.

Changing your scooters front brake pads is a fairly easy procedure but remember that the brakes are a crucial safety device. We recommend that when refitting the caliper you should use a thread sealant to ensure no bolts come undone.
