Replacing the clutch springs in your 50cc scooter

Stiffer clutch springs allow the engine to rev higher before pulling away, meaning the engine has greater turning momentum and is more likely to have reached its maximum power band. To improve acceleration further, change to a lighter set of Roller Weights in the variator at the same time as changing the clutch springs.

Do not confuse the clutch springs with the Contra Spring! This is a mistake that is often made. The Contra Spring simply opposes the Roller Weights and (in my experience) is best left as the stock spring, just fit lighter Roller Weights. Anyway, back to the changing the Clutch Springs;

  1. Remove the Transmission Cover by undoing the 8mm retaining bolts that secure it. You will have to remove the kick starter first.
  2. Undo the 13mm bolt that secures the clutch housing to the transmission drive shaft, this is best done using an impact wrench. You can now slide the bell housing and clutch assembly off the shaft. Removing the nut that secures the bell housing Chinese Taiwanese Scooter qmb139 gy6
  3. You can now undo the larger nut that holds the clutch and rear variator cones together. I use a rubber filter wrench to stop the clutch turning whilst I undo the nut.

    TIP: As you undo the nut, the compressed Contra Spring will try and ping all the clutch components off, take care and note the position of all parts. Undo the nut that holds the clutch assembly together, motorbike and clone scooter
  4. Once you have the clutch apart you will see the 3 small springs that pull the clutch plates inwards, replace these with a performance set of clutch springs and then put the scooter back together by reversing these steps. Notes

There are various different grades of clutch spring available for your scooter. Often they are graded by their stiffness or the number of revs at which they will engage the clutch.

Depending upon your weight etc we would recommend 1500rpm or 2000rpm springs. Stock springs will usually bite at around 1000rpm, although this varies between manufacturers.
