Checking and changing your chinese 4 stroke scooters Oil

This is a relatively easy task that can be achieved using a simple wrench and a container to collect the old engine oil. In some cases you may find that your 4 stroke chinese scooters performance can be improved if the old engine oil was too thick or the oil filter screen was blocked.

Engine oil is very cheap in the quantities that are required for a 50cc 4 stroke import scooter, so it is worth changing the oil for a good quality branded oil.

  1. Check the engine oil level. Place the scooter upright on its center stand for a few minutes to ensure that all the oil has drained down into the bottom of the engine.
  2. Undo the oil filler cap/dipstick from the engine (this is usually on the side of the scooter just above the exhaust).

  3. To check the oil level on your scooter, wipe the dipstick clean, then dip it fully down into the oil filler hole. There is a CrissCross section on the dipstick. Fill with oil until the oil is near the maximum mark. NOTE: do not screw the dipstick in, just dip it in up to the threads.

  4. If your changing the oil, undo the Oil Drain plug from the bottom of the engine using a wrench. Take care as oil will poor out quickly once the drain plug is removed.

  5. Drain the old engine oil from the engine by placing a container beneath the oil drain hole to catch the old engine oil. NOTE: There may be a spring and/or oil filter screen held in place by the oil drain plug. They will probably fall in the old engine oil as you remove the Oil Drain plug, retrieve them if necessary.

Notes

Chinese 50cc 4 stroke scooters do not have much power, usually around 2 bhp! Changing the engine oil to a thinner specification can have a noticeable effect on performance without posing unnecessary danger to your scooters moving parts.

Most manufacturers specify SAE 10w 30 engine oil, although the factories that produce these cheap chinese import scooters are renowned for shipping these scooters with non branded ungraded oils! You may notice a further improvement in power if you go even thinner, say SAE 5w 20 semi synthetic.

I am currently running a 50cc scooter, cheap huatian QT derivative on 5w 20 as a test. After a couple of thousand miles I'll strip the engine and check for signs of wear!
