Checking and changing your chinese 4 stroke scooters Spark Plug

Changing the spark plug on your scooter is not a difficult task. Some scooters may have bodywork or fittings that impede access, if not all you need is a ratchet wrench and a spark plug socket.

It is important to buy the correct type of spark plug for your 139QMB moped otherwise the plug may run too hot or too cold. This will effect the performance of your scooter and the life span of the spark plug. The correct spark plug for most Chinese imported 50cc scooters is an NGK C7HSA.

  1. Place your motorbike on its center stand. In these pictures I have removed some bodywork for camera access, this is not necessary. The spark plug is recessed into the side of the engine.
  2. Pull the High Tension Lead (HT Lead) from the top of the spark plug.

  3. You will now be able to fit your spark plug socket onto the spark plug. Use a ratchet spanner to undo the plug from the scooters engine block.

TIP: Turn anti-clockwise to undo the spark plug.

  4. Remove the old spark plug and inspect it. This can give you a good indication of how the engine is running. See NGKs Spark Plug Guide for more detail.
  5. Check the spark plug gap on your new sparkplugs electrode. About 0.6mm is about right. chinese qmb139 scooter Spark Plug Gap
  6. Fit the new plug into your scooters engine, tighten with the ratchet wrench and remember to push the HT lead back onto the spark plug. NOTE: DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE SPARK PLUG! The cylinder head is made of alloy which is soft and the thread can strip easily.

Notes

If your Chinese 50cc 4 stroke scooter is getting difficult to start, down on power or struggles to run properly, change the spark plug. You should also consider changing the ignition coil and HT Lead at the same time as these can also produce the same symtoms.

Other manufacturers, ie Champion and Autolite also produce suitable spark plugs for chines 4 stroke scooters and motorbikes.
