Removing the Variator Speed Limiter

To remove the variator restrictor from your imported 50c chinese scooter you will have to gain access to the transmission. This is not too difficult but you may find it hard to undo the nut holding the variator onto the crankshaft. Ideally, you would use an impact wrench to undo the nut. If you do not have an impact wrench, you may be able to undo the nut by getting an assistant to hold on the back brake.

If you suspect that your chinese scooter is not reaching its maximum gear ratio then follow these steps to see if a restrictor is fitted to your cvt.

  1. Remove the Kick Start Lever.
  2. Undo the bolts that secure the transmission cover to your 50cc 4 stroke scooters engine.

  3. Once the bolts have been removed, you may find that you have to use a lever to prise the cover from the engine. NOTE: Make sure you have removed ALL the bolts and any other obstructions before applying any force to the lever!

  4. You should now be able to see the variator assembly. You need to undo the bolt that attaches the variator cones to the crankshaft, ideally using an air wrench.

  5. The outer variator cone should now slide off the scooters crankshaft, if there is a restrictor washer it will stop the two cones from coming completely together. Remove the washer (I do not have a picture!) and then reassemble.

Notes

On reassembly, it can be a bit tricky to get the drive belt back onto your chinese scooters variator.

You will need to force the rear cones open against the pressure of the springs to allow enough slack in the belt.

Make sure you do the crankshaft bolt really tight again, use a Thread Lock type paste to be really sure. You don't want the bolt to come undone on your motorbike.
